ANNUAL EVENTS

FALL SEMESTER

MANGO LASSI SOCIAL

On a hot August weekend, who wouldn’t want cold, refreshing Mango Lassi (mango/yogurt milkshake)? Every fall, as students begin their school year, SAS invites everyone to grab a Lassi and socialize with Owls across campus. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet and greet new and old friends while getting to know our plans for the year & how to become a member!

GARBA

Grab your dandiya, put on some vibrant desi clothes, and come dance the night away at Garba! Garba originates from the region of Gujurat, where various sequences of dance steps and circles celebrate the Hindu festival Navratri. In the past we’ve partnered with the University of Houston and Vibha Houston to get discounted tickets to a Houston-wide Garba celebration! Last year, we hosted our very own Garba in RMC quad to observe social distancing guidelines and invite any member of the Rice community.

DHAMAKA

Dhamaka (“blast” in sanskrit) is our annual, campus-wide South Asian Showcase. With over 700+ attendees annually, we have various dance, singing, and individual performances from students across campus. In the past we’ve had amazing segments of spoken word, A ccapella, dancing, fashion shows, and so much more! The night culminates with a meal catered from a local South Asian restaurant and an afterparty full of dance & fun. Make sure to consider applying to our Fall board positions (New Student Representative, College Representative, or Dhamaka Committee) to help put this brilliant show together!

SPRING SEMESTER

SPRING MELA

Each spring we host Mela – free food, South Asian-native games, sports, and music! We cater restaurants that represent various regions of South Asia (Nepalese Momos, South Indian Biryani, Pakistani Kabobs – so much more!) Come eat food, play a game of cricket/ludo, and hang out with other members across campus.

SAS BALL

Ball is our end of year SAS banquet to celebrate our graduating seniors and wave our final goodbyes. To close out the year and celebrate the hard work we dress up in our ~fanciest~ South Asian attire, share a nice meal, and dance the night away!
